Starting from Oct.11, Shanghai taxi passenger will pay about 10 percent more for the cab fare. The city raised the fare to offset higher fuel prices and environment protection costs.
The flag-fall fare is increased from 11RMB to 12RMB. The fare per kilometer is changed from 2.1RMB to 2.4RMB. Three years ago, the flag-fall fare was increased from 10RMB to 11RMB, people were hard to accept at that time. The passengers to take taxi decreased sharply in one month since the policy was announced. After one month, the passengers requirement of taxi trended up and kept the same level as before.
Some citizens said that they cannot afford the fare increase. They prefer to choose subway or buses to go to work. In the meantime, the high cab fare will provide business opportunity for illegal cabbies. The cabbies are also afraid that more and more people will take other transportation ways which will result in less business opportunities.
